Mendenahall Glacier Ice Adventure
Explore Juneaus Mendenhall Glacier on this amazing tour
The Mendenhall Glacier is a 13-mile-long river of flowing ice. It is 1,800 ft. deep and a half-mile wide and even though it is the most visited glacier in Alaska, most people only see it from afar. Our extended Alaska glacier tour gives you ample time for pictures and exploration while trekking with your guides directly in front of the glacier ice. Be one of the few to experience the remote beauty of the Mendenhall Glacier, as only 1% of all visitors to the glacier will be able to have this experience. This immersive guided tour brings you into the Alaskan wilderness and face to face with the glacier ice.
Cruise Ship Guests
Your exploration begins at the cruise ship docks in downtown Juneau, where you’re greeted by our professional guides to officially start your adventure. Your group size will be limited to enhance the experience of this excursion. You will be carried away on a narrated van ride deep into the Tongass National Forest, the largest National Forest in the United States, which is where the Mendenhall Glacier resides. You will go directly to the West side of Mendenhall Lake where your equipment and safety gear awaits you. After getting suited up, your guides teach you how to paddle safely and efficiently across the Mendenhall Lake.
The journey is just as important as the destination and that’s why we access the area directly in front of the glacier via a canoe ride across Mendenhall Lake. As you cruise speedily across the lake you will pass icebergs and wildlife. You will experience the serenity of the Alaskan wilderness throughout the entire tour. Surrounded by steep cliffs, the thundering Nugget Falls, icebergs, and native wildlife; this voyage to the glacier is unforgettable.
Once arriving on the rocky shore next to the glacier, your guides will lead you on an exploration trek around the rocky moraine to view the glacier up close. This excursion brings you right in front of the glacier for front-row exploration of the quickly-receding glacial ice. One of the most unique aspects of our trip is the constant state of movement and change to the ice caves and wilderness area on this tour, meaning no one tour is the same as the next.

The Mendenhall glacier is receeding fast and this is a perfect way to see the glacier up close and learn about it at the same time. Our guides, Bryce and Alec were extremely competent, knowledgable, and also super fun to be around. Our group size was much smaller than the few other boats we saw on the water. The trip was done safely and both guides had a high level of knowledge about the glacier and also the surrounding environment which was really interesting. The canoe paddle was a refreshing bit of exercise through a beautiful lake. We stepped out on the shore near the glacier for a close-up view and walked on ground that has recently been uncovered after thousands of years buried under the glacier. This is a special trip that I would highly recommend and I would also highly recommend these two guides as well!

Stunning views and excellent guides!
This trip was the highlight of my time in Alaska. You can't beat getting to see a glacier up close and personal. Everyone working together made the paddling easier. We had plenty of time to spend at the base of the glacier. We found lots of interesting rocks where the glacier had been just a few years ago. The guides were just as excited to be there as we were. That made the trip feel even more special. They went the extra mile to make sure we had a memorable experience.
What if our ship is delayed or our port is cancelled?
Alaska Cruise Ships tend to run on time, but there are always exceptions. If your cruise ship is late, we will do our best to accommodate. We understand this is completely out of your control as well as ours and if we are unable to accommodate, we will provide a full refund. If you cruise ship has to cancel Juneau as a port of call, we will also provide a full refund.
Are we guaranteed to get back to the ship in time?
We guarantee that your tour will return on time. All tour times are scheduled around cruise ship arrival and departure times, and allow for adequate time before and after the adventure to easily make it back onboard and on time.
Will our tour be canceled if it is raining?
No. Juneau is located in the worlds largest temperate rainforest (the Tongass National Forest, it is also the largest National Forest in the United States). Rain is very common in Juneau and we welcome it. We provide a rain jacket, rain pants and rain boots to each guest, but please dress to stay warm and possibly get wet. If Liquid Alaska Tours deems weather conditions are unsafe, Liquid Alaska Tours will cancel the tour (and provide a full refund).
How close will I get to the glacier?
Depending on conditions we will either be able to walk directly up to the glacier ice or be able to walk on top of it. We cannot guarantee any conditions and these are assessed daily for safety.
What type of clothing should I wear?
The weather is very unpredictable in Alaska. We would like our guests to dress according to the weather, noting that the glacier will be about 10 degrees cooler than land. Guests are encouraged to dress in non-cotton layers, bring gloves, a warm hat and sunglasses if it is sunny. We’ll provide you with waterproof jackets, pants, and boots.
Will I see any wildlife or bears on this tour?
Bald eagles, porcupines, mountain goats, herons, shorebirds, arctic terns and waterfowl are all common sights, however this is not a designated wildlife tour and specific wildlife cannot be guaranteed.
Are there any physical requirements for this tour?
Minimum weight: 90 lbs.
Maximum weight: 240 lbs.
Minimum age: 12 years old
Yes. This is a very active tour. It is roughly an hour of paddling each way to get across the Mendenhall Lake to the glacier. Once arriving on shore we spend approximately 60-90 minutes hiking and exploring the glacier.
Guests must have full use of their limbs to get in and out the canoe and to assist in paddling the canoe across the lake (a total of two hours).
Are there bathrooms available?
Flush toilets are located at our meeting and drop off location at the Goldbelt Tramway.
Once our adventure starts, we bring our guests directly to the West Glacier Trailhead at the Mendenhall Lake. This is where we get everyone geared up, we go over safety and paddling instructions and where we start our journey.
There are very nice pit toilets operated by the United States Forest Service located at the West Glacier Trailhead. Our guests are welcome to use these before our gear up and once we get back.
During our adventure on the Mendenhall Glacier there are no facilities available. Mother nature does provide plenty of space, we just ask that you abide by our Leave No Trace partnership and pack out your trash.

Our raincoats with hoods sizes are: XS- XXL in both mens and womens.
Our rain pants are: XS- XXL in both mens and womens.

Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft
Experience 3 iconic Alaskan adventures—flightseeing, glacier hiking, and packrafting—all in just 5 hours!
This Packraft adventure begins with boarding a six-passenger floatplane and taking off from the water. The scenic flight will head towards the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a gateway to flowing glaciers of the Juneau icefield. Keep an eye out for mountain goats, black bears and moose along the way. After landing on the Norris Glacier fed lake, hike over the glacially carved terrain to a cove where your packraft awaits. From here, you will be outfitted in single person packrafts and introduced paddling techniques by your guides. Once you launch your packraft, your paddle to the glacier will take you past icebergs, all while taking in the stunning mountain and glacier landscapes around you.
As you approach the glacier, prepare to beach your boat right on the Norris Glacier, your guide will assist you in getting out of your packraft and into micro-spikes. Explore the moonscape-like area of the glacier all by foot and get panoramic views of Norris and Taku glaciers. Look for crevasses, glacier pools, moulins, and other incredible ice features. Glacier features come and go throughout the season, just like the ebb and flow of our glaciers. Upon completion of your glacier hike, slide back into your packraft and paddle back to shore. Your floatplane awaits to take you back to Juneau.

We did the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike & Packraft on June 30 - incredible 5 star experience!! We're locals and would absolutely recommend this tour to locals and vistors alike, it's a truly unique adventure. Abby, Cory, and the rest of the crew were so passionate and knowledgeable about the glaciers/landscape. The seaplane ride was about 25 minutes both ways. We landed on Norris lake and then had a 10 minute walk to where you get in the packrafts. The packraft paddle is about 15 minutes and you get out directly onto the glacier to hike around! You can tell that safety is the priority in every portion of the tour. A must do in Juneau!

My favorite Juneau excursion so far
During my weeklong vacation in Juneau, I booked a total of 8 excursions. There was certainly some tough competition, but I think this was likely my favorite for the following reasons:
- Ideal group size - with a limit of 6 travelers, this trip is a great way to get away from the crowds. For the record, there were a total of 3 travelers on my outing, which meant a good amount of personalized interaction and one-on-one face time with the guides and staff, as opposed to a more typical tour where you need to compete for attention and are treated more as an interchangeable tourist.
- Degree of physical exertion - most tours require very little physical exertion, which sort of dilutes the 'sense of accomplishment' factor. My favorite part of the tour was the packrafting portion - it felt great to know that I had to put in some minimal amount of effort to get to the destination as opposed to being shuttled there without having to lift a hand.
- Novelty factor - I had never used crampons or a packraft before (though I have kayaked previously), so it was great to experience these for the first time.
- Walking on top of a glacier - always a magical experience.
Finally, I wanted to add a few shout outs for whoever at Above and Beyond Alaska ends up reading this:
Dan, the guide who took us out on packrafting and the glacier walk, was amazing and great to interact with. I was really impressed to learn about all of the prep work that he does to get everything set up for the tours, with one example being clearing off and marking the path we walked on to get to the packrafts, and I'm sure this applies to the other guides who do this tour as well. He also came across as a very experienced and knowledgeable guide who really knows his stuff.
I interacted with Claire from the office several times that day. Through all these interactions, she was really personable, friendly, open and a joy to converse with. I felt really welcome at the ABAK office relative to other tour company offices that I've visited pre- and post-excursion.
I feel bad about not remembering the name of the woman who picked us up and did the drop off (I did remember that she was from Minneapolis), but she was really friendly, sociable, and great to chat with as well.
If I find myself in Juneau again in the near future, I'd definitely look into doing another tour with ABAK.

This was an excellent experience with a fantastic crew! Guides were super knowledgeable (and funny to boot). Ben and Chris made everyone feel comfortable in the canoe and just had so much knowledge of the glacier. We were really lucky in that we also saw a couple of bald eagles along the way. It's a little sad to see how much the glacier has receded over time but it is still well worth going there and having your mind blown by how much ice there really is. Do the paddling tour -- it's taxing on the arms but the views and how close up you get to the glacier itself is so worth it! Thanks for a fantastic experience!

A great way to spend a day in Juneau. Noah and Keanu (spelling - sorry!) were fantastic guides. They are very knowledgeable about the history of the area, the geology and fauna and kept us all paddling along. You will need to paddle! Not kidding. It’s about an hour each way. So worth it though as the glacier is beautiful and the lake is peaceful. Not really a hike- we walked a bit to get closer to the glacier, but it’s really about the canoeing. The trip is very well organized. It was a bit chilly and there was rain on and off, so layer accordingly.
